Just wondering if anyone feels the same way! Apple has made rea
progress recently in converting new users from windows. One of th
main reasons being that the security is almost impenetrable. Wouldn'
you think that since the problem is with Microsofts software, the
might just bite the bullet and offer the needed protection free

Windows OneCare isn't free???!!????!!!????!!???? Who's paying for it and how
much does it cost? Anyways, if you're using Windows XP and want free
anti-virus protection visit the Anti-Virus Section on the Downloads page of
my website: www.stopmalware.tk and check out those anti-virus programs which
are all free. I personally recommend AVG or AntiVir; however, if you would
like more "in-depth security" you can visit the Anti-Virus section on the
Company Products page for a list of comprehensive and internationally
prestigious anti-virus programs. While some people might like Windows
OneCare and believe it's worth paying for many anti-virus review websites
and David Lipman's anti-virus testing has proven that Windows OneCare's
detection rate is almost half that of let's say Kaspersky.

Good Luck on Securing your Computer!

MS OneCare should be shelved !

It has one of the lowest infector catch rates in the anti virus industry.

I wouldn't say the security is "impenetrable", more like no one cares to
hack the few people who are using it as they represent very little in terms
of computer users. If it was "impenetrable", then there wouldn't have been
periodic security releases for the OS. =)

As for offering OneCare for free.. It is right now and I wouldn't use it in
lieu of.. well.. anything else in a production environment. It is not
up-to-par with the other offerings out there by far. And some of those
other offerings - they are free.

My reply is at the bottom of your message :

Hello ! Microsoft cannot provide free antivirus protection !!! Impossible
and now I'll explain you why:

Windows Defender is antispyware software which is now free and will be free
forever because of two reasons:
@ because Microsoft do not have antispyware parthners
@ because Microsoft has added Windows Defender in Windows Vista-the new
Windows. It will protect all Windows Vista users

One Care is antivirus software(and has some antispyware protection , I
think) but it cannot be free :
1) because Microsoft has many antivirus parthners and Microsoft cannot kill
all the parthers they have
2) because it is expensive to create definitions for antivirus
software.Antispyware programs can have definitions once a week or once in two
weeks whereas new viral threats apprea everyday and Microsoft specialists
should react as soon as possible and this is expensive thing

The reason one is really reliable but let me just tell one thing:
Some months ago I downloaded OneCare on a test computer and kept it there
just 3 days,I didn't like it.As David said , it has extremely low detection
rate, extremely low!!! Because of the fact I subscibed for this BETA product
which apparently I do not use and I do not like , I receive emails from
Microsoft every month informing me about news about OneCare.I know OneCare
will really soon be released finally and its price will be unbeatable-really
low (low detection rate for low price,by the way) and because:
@ because of the fact OneCare is Microsoft product and because of the
Windows is MS product , Microsoft should know the best what to do with it and
how to protect it
@ and because One Care's price will be low

many users will buy it

If somebody from Microsoft is reading this , they should know that I do not
want to offend anybody but they really should make their product much
better!!!

No. From what I've seen so far it appears to be a 3rd rate knock-off of
where real anti virus companies were 4 years ago. Far from being a free
service, Microsoft should actually pay me if they expect me to use it.

I'm a mac user myself some of the time. Apple, like Microsoft, have to
release monthly security updates. Why do you think that is?

I'm always surprised at "professionals" who STILL have to be asked "Have you
checked (event viewer / syslog)".

"almost impenetrable"
Do you have a source for that?
Some advocates of Linux say the same about Linux.

As for "problem is with Microsoft's software".
Take out the word "Microsoft" and your statement is true since it is
applicable to all operating systems and software to some degree.
If perfection is wanted or expected from any OS or software, you will
constantly be disappointed regardless your choice since your expectations
will never be met.

Panda probably is close as to why it will not be free.
Why does it need to be?
One Care is only one of many options currently available, some are free and
others are not.
As I understand One Care, there is NOTHING offered that is not already
needed with any operating system so your suggestion that Microsoft software
has problems is not relevant in regards to One Care.

Apple largely depends on what is often called "Security through obscurity".
There are not many Apple users so malware writers get less bang for the buck
when an exploit is identified.

I do not currently use One Care and I may never since I am switching to free
versions of software to protect my computers.

Er, riiight!!! That would be why Apple is now shipping their computers
with Intel chips and even provided a boot manager so Windows could be
installed on those Macs.

One of the
main reasons being that the security is almost impenetrable.

Where in the world did you ever get that silly idea. It's no such
thing; just not much of a target, as no more than 4% of the world's
desktop/laptop computers are Macs.

True, but the phrase does have a nice ring to it. ;-}
