My future father in law gave us this computer and it already has windows xp.
i am bought microsoft student and home 2007 and when i put the cd in it says
that i need a newer windows. why is this happening? because on the side of
the case it says that your computer needs windows xp. please help i am so
fustrated!

Verify the OS requirements. It may need Windows XP SP2 to install. If so, verify
your system's version via Start > Run, then enter "winver", w/o the quotes, then
click on OK.

If your system needs updating, go to the Windows Update site.

Probably because SP2 is not installed.

So there actually is some software out there that *requires* SP2?
Interesting.

That's kind of ironic, since some software apparently won't install or run
*with* SP2 (or so I've heard, or maybe that has all been resolved by now).

Oh, there are bunches and bunches that require SP2.

Really? Any examples come to mind? I think someone once mentioned
Defender (whatever that is, I assume it's some game), so are we just talking
about games here?
