The reference was probably to Open Office (formerly Star Office)
which reads MS Office formats and can duplicate a large number
of its functions: available free from several locations inc.
www.openoffice.org.

It's free also, so watch out for other sites that sell the same thing.
Uses the GPL if IIRC. Very, very capable now at rev 3.1, the latest.

I've sent a complaint to eBay where I've seen sellers that are actually
SELLING the freeware OpenOffice product. They prey on ignorant buyers
by charging them for something the user could download for free (and the
buyer has to download it, anyway, from the seller or the seller simply
directs them to the openoffice.org download link). eBay came back and
said that these scammy auctions do not violate their policies.

There's always some scammer trying to sell something that can be gotten
for free. There's always some ignorant that will fall for it.
