microsoft.net framework has come up as an optional update available from
windows update.

I don't understand what this about and, therefore, I am hesitant to install
it. I would like to know the advantages of installing and the disadvantages
of not installing this update.

Thanks.

..Net or DotNet or however it's written is the beginning of a grand vision
that Microsoft has for merging the desktop computer with the internet. It's
actually quite an ambitious proposition. It's too soon to say if the idea
will ever come to anything. For now, the .Net project has produced some
programming tools that an increasing number of programmers find to be very
convenient. To use software made with these tools, you need to install the
..net framework.

So I guess you'll need to install the .net framework if you want to use
software that requires it. Otherwise, there's no need. I haven't read of any
problems caused by installing the .net framework on an otherwise
well-maintained computer.

If you have already installed MS.net Framework 1.1, I would go ahead and get
all the associated updates that go with it. These actually cure a few
problems with the original install and I did not see any problems caused by
the additional updates.
I installed .net Framework because some of the newer software such as
Webstyles 4.0 require it. I think we will see more and more software
requiring .net Framework.

Good luck
