Microsoft .NET Framework (Do I need it?)

I would appreciate some input on Microsoft.NET Framework.

Why? Microsoft Update on my PC has failed several installation attempts of
version 2. Installation proceeds until it gets an access denied & then
'rolls back.' I find no relevant MS Knowledge Base or forum articles that
accurately address the possible reasons.

Furthermore, from what I have gathered, I see no real reason to be concerned
since I am an average home user and .NET appears to have significance
primarily for developers and business installations.

I have uninstalled the .NET Framework packages and hotpatch listed by the
Control Panel Install/Uninstall function. I will henceforth ignore future
notices of available .NET Framework updates unless somebody can explain what
I will be missing as a result.

System scans (WinDoctor) following removal of .NET indicate my PC is fine
except that a common file - 'DotNetInstaller.exe' cannot find a missing
file - 'mscoree.dll'

Ought I to be able, safely, to delete DotNetInstaller.exe ??

Thanks for your comments.

The short answer is that you don't need it unless you have applications
that need it. How will you know if your applications need it? It will
tell you when you try to install that it needs whichever version of .net
framework. Also, before you download or buy programs look at the system
requirements and the .net requirements are usually listed when they are
needed. As for the "WinDoctor" error you can simply ignore the message,
it means nothing. Also, be careful with your "Doctor". It is known to
have killed more than one patient...

I tried windoctor on win2k sys, and uninstalled it after it caused conflicts
with certain apps
ie apps wouldnt run correctly

I've had the same problem with the updates and found the answer on
another newsgroup:

Uninstall .net framework, reboot computer
Reinstall .net framework, reboot computer
Run Live Update, install updates.

It's a pain, but it's Microsoft.
