"Microsoft Messenger"

When I log into Internet Explorer, I get a dialogue box
saying I can't continue unless I download a newer version
of Microsoft Messenger. I haven't been online for
awhile. When I got on a few days ago, I had to download
a newer version of Internet Explorer. But I've never
heard of Microsoft Messenger and when I try to download,
I get messages mentioning "security". I've heard there
are viruses that claim to be about Microsoft security
issues. Is it safe to download this "Microsoft
Messenger" update?

If you don't want it, turn the annoyance off.
