Why do I always have to go to Send/Receive and left click it before I get any
new messages? This is even if I minimize and stay on line.

Go to to Tools/Options/General - under send and receive messages- Select
"Send and receive messages at Startup".

I have done that in the past and I still have to point at send/receive and
click to get new messages!

Also, while there, select the box "Check for new messages every XX minutes".
I recommend you pick a value for XX in the range of 5-15.
