I have a Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer - about 2-3 years old. Today it
has frozen twice - I just wondered if it was wearing out - or what do you
think? Why would it suddenly freeze twice in one day?

Assume its a ball-type mouse? i.e. not optical? If so, might need
cleaning. Rotate the ring that covers the ball, blow the dust out of the
cavity, wash and clean the ball, reassemble and it should be OK

Hi, Barrie - and Judy.

Good advice, but also take a close look inside the ball cavity while you
have the ball out. I've often found lint or other fibers wrapped tightly
around the sensing rollers in there. Blowing (even with compressed air in a
can) doesn't get it out. Cleaning the ball doesn't help this problem. I've
had to use a small knife or other scraping tool to loosen the thread, then
tweezers to pull it off the roller.

Try another mouse on the system.. if that freezes too, it is not the mouse
that is causing the problem.. some mice do not last quite as we expect.. I
would suggest that if you have to replace it, look at the Logitech range..

How do you get it unfrozen? Does rebooting fix it? If so, it's
almost certainly not a problem with the mouse itself, but a
software issue.

Since it's an Explorer and doesn't have a ball to clean, try cleaning the
bottom where the light is with a soft clean cloth. I find cat hair, dust, etc
can accumulate. Also clean the surface of the table it's on. Then try
checking the Intellimouse settings in control panel-Mouse. You might consider
updating the Intellipoint software to the latest at:
