Hi,
I am using the M'soft XP fax console to receive and send
faxes. I have one phone line/point on the wall with a
split adaptor - one to the phone, the other to my PC and
M'soft fax.

The problem is when receiving, with the fax software
configured to receive automatically, it is unable to
distinguish between a phone call and an incoming fax, so
people trying to call hear a fax tone.

I thought like a normal fax machine, M'soft fax could
distinguish between phone and fax signals and only
automatically receive a fax

Does anyone have a solution to this problem?

Thanks,
Rob

Is there a solution other than getting a separate phone
line.

You can call your phone company and see if they offer a fax
switch that will answer all phone calls, and route the call
to the computer or telephone as appropriate.

Google for "telephone fax switch"

Ok, thanks. I think I'll go buy a switch device as the
alternative looks like opening a can of worms. Strange
that M'soft would leave out a feature so fundamental to
PC fax software??

Rob

Rather than distinctive ring (which requires additional phone number for
the same line and has distinctive or different tone than the other
number) you might be looking for a device which supports CNG tone
detection (which is an 1100Hz tone transmitted by most newer fax
machines when calling another fax machine.) see:

Actually, there has never been DR support under any NT-based OS - so that's
over a decade.

Not strange at all, a real FAX is always a better option. I
use XP FAX to send FAXes, but I plan to get a free eFAX
account to get faxes.
