I'm trying to install Microsoft Fax from Control
Panel/Add & Remove/Windows Components. It requires
something called ¨e÷w\i386 from my XP disc. XP was
installed on this machine by Dell, which provided me with
a Windows XP Professional Reinstallation CD. This file
is not found on this disc. Does anyone know what I'm
doing wrong? Thanks for any help you can provide!

When you add Windows component to Windows XP with SP1 installed,
setup prompts you for the SP1 CD-ROM or the I386 folder?

Why don't you ask Dell. How would anyone here know (unless they are a Dell US customer themselves). In Australia Dell provides original disks, reinstallation disk, reinstalation partition. Yanks seem to be ripped of by Dell. They made the software, they know how it works. Dell have an equivalent forum to the one you are using.

Other Dell suckers have reported similar problems with Dell's version of XP.

It isn't only Dell. eMachines does the same
thing. The CD they furnish is a GHOST image of what they supplied,
and all you can do with it is get back to where you were when you
bought the machine. They also give you a 'drivers' disk.......

Hi, John.

As the others have said, the proper source for information on your Dell
computer is Dell. In addition to the official Dell channels, you might find
peer-to-peer support from other Dell users in this Usenet newsgroup:

With all due respect, RC, I don't think Dell will solve
it. Dell's attitude will be like eMachines (especially now).
EMachines says they take no responsibility other than giving
you a Restore Disk that puts your machine back as it was when
you first got it. That destroys all your subsequent work, and
still doesn't guarantee that you'll have FAX that works. I'm
still led to ask why Microsoft can't furnish a download which
will install Microsoft FAX component by itself when the
Add/Remove facility won't.

Hi, Bill.

My main purpose in posting that (since I know nothing about FAX, with or
without a computer) was to point out the peer-to-peer Usenet newsgroup. The
OP should be able to find some "birds of a feather" there for sympathy and
empathy - and maybe some helpful hints.

John,
Place the Dell Reinstallation CD MS Windows XP Home/Pro Edition(s) including SP1, your WinXP installation files are there, in your CDROM. If it Autoloads, just press the Exit button on the window pops up. Then you can try to install the program. When it asks for I386 files, BROWSE to the CDROM where your CD.

You might want to consider copying the I386 folder on your HDD, if you have the space available, so that in the future, if you need these files again for future progam installations.

I tried that on my eMachines. Didn't work. But that's
not Dell.
Good luck.

Bill,
1. Did your Emachine come with a CD for windows, or is your restore files/folders on a hidden drive? If it is a restore CD, is there a 'I386' folder on it? If not, are there a number of '*.CAB' files on the CD? The driver/program files may be hidden there.

2. Did the Emachine PC include a 'Companion' CD. This usually has the Windows files needed for upgrades or program installations, but can't easily be used to reinstall PC maker and/or WIN OS software. My PBell has this CD, plus an PBell OEM Windows OS installation CD.

3. Did your PC come with a Modem, and did they include a driver floppy or CD? Sometimes there is a FAX program there, which the PC maker uses, instead of the FAX program from MS. Dell has one, on the Modem driver CD that came with my PC.

4. Do you have a printer or a scanner, or an All-in-One unit? There may be a Fax program included on the hardware's software/driver floppy/CD. There is a FAX program on the software/driver CD that came with my Lexmark X73 All-in-One.

The emachine came with 2 CDs. One has only "Drivers" and no FAX. The
other is a Norton Ghost CD which has a direct image of what the
machine had when delivered. Nothing, absolutely nothing, can
be seen on it or done with it other than essentially reformat
the drive and load back what it came with.

Yes, it has a modem. Yes, it has drivers for the modem on the Drivers CD.
No, there is no FAX software, only the drivers.

Yes, I have a printer, and a sacnner, and I also have 'other' working FAX
software. But I want to at least have the capability of trying out the
FAX which is a part of XP, that presumably I'm entitled to since I
paid for XP, but which I am unable to. I don't see that as an unfair wish.

Bill,
Sorry about the delay in responding to you. I had to think about a response to you.

Not be insensitive, but actually you did not lease/purchase a full version of WinXP (retail $179.00), if WinXP came with your eMachine, you got a 'LITE' version of the OS. The deal that your PC maker made with MS, may have included that you lose some the features of the full version of XP, and limited the method that is used to reinstall the OS, to prevent piracy, by using the Norton Ghost OS installation CD. This was a way to cut costs to them, and partially to you.

They did not delete the Fax installation interface from XP's Control Panel in the 'Windows Add/Remove Programs' interface, but removed the files that are needed to install the program. So your PC Maker was responsible to provide you with a FAX program if it is offered, not MS. Also your PC Maker could have advertise that your PC had a Fax "compatible" modem, but still require you to purchase Fax program yourself.

So if you plan to upgrade your PC's hardware, make sure you get the hardware drivers for the item. Your CD's may not include any of the Generic MS Hardware drivers that can be used with these items.
