Microsoft Expression vs Visual Studio?

We have graphics/web designers at our firm and then programmers. We're
trying to work together without stepping on each other's toes. So far,
we've all been using Visual Studio.

But, is there something great about Microsoft Expression that the graphics
people can use it and the programmers can keep using VS, or should everyone
just be on VS?

I.e. why did they create Expression? Is it for a different purpose, or
exactly what I'm talking about?

Ron,

I think that originally Expression was going to be for both designers and
developers.

But for marketing and targeting reasons, MS is now saying that Expression is
strictly a tool for designers. They say that matching capabilities will be in
Visual Studio for developers.

This is reflected in the fact that Expression is not part of the software
stack that is available vis MSDN subsription.

Yes and I'm currently watching a show about Orcas. It looks like that the
next version of VS will include the same design surface then Web
Expression...

Not sure it clarify the situation though ;-)

AFAIK you can evaluate Web Expression from MS website...

Mhm I think (or better, I hope) that the Visual Designer for Web Forms of
Orcas it's like the Expression Web but with ASP.Net controls and
intellisense & co.

Is there an example of VB code which will take a datasource and extract from
that the needed info (columns etc.) to create the columns and then bind the
data?

This seems so much more difficult to do an ad-hoc query.

Use Dreamweaver.

I was at MS about 5 years ago; and I basically said to my boss 'how
mother ****ing dare you make me use Visual Studio.. for Web Pages..
I'm a dreamweaver guy; MS is a bunch of ****tards still stuck on
Frontpage'

I really hope I lit some fires under their asses back them.

Dreamweaver SLAUGHTERS visual studio for everything. I mean..
WIZARDS? Performance? Stability?

and btw; **** asp.net also go back to Php-- the worlds most popular
language (ever since MS killed Vb without a replacement)

I recently saw a video that show how they will work together. The
idea is that the developer will create a basic UI in VS with all the
controls needed to support the app. The designer can then load the VS
project directly in Expressions and then make the app pretty without
being able to touch the code. When done, he saves the project. Since
both VS and Expressions will be able to read XAML, both apps can load
the project.

'designers' and 'developers'

that concept is so 1990s

MAKE THEM COMBINED, FROM THE START AND GIVE THEM TO DEVELOPERS

and don't charge us a grand when you already get the 'IIS Tax'
 
I'm not sure I understand. You have a data source like a dataset, or a
database? I have a program that will pull the column names of a table, but
you would still have to know what controls to bind the columns to, wouldn't
you?

Windows Mail? Is that anything like Outlook Express?

It's essentially one of the replacement products for FrontPage, which is being phased out.

Some of the designer technologies will probably be incorporated into Visual Studio but Expression
was not really designed to be used in conjunction with Visual Studio.

Last I heard, Expression was *not* included in the MSDN program. It has
annoyed a lot of people. Microsoft's reasoning is that the Expression
products are for designers, not developers.

yet ANOTHER symptom that Microsoft will never be competitive with
DreamWeaver

there isn't a web developer in the world that is not both developer
and designer
