Hello,
I have Office 97 SR2 on Win98. First let me say that I'm not connected to
anything. This is my personal computer.
When I try to open Outlook I get a curious error message:
"Network problems are preventing connection to the Microsoft Exchange Server
computer. Contact your system administrator if this condition persists."
Ummm.... There is no system administrator and what the heck is an Exchange
Server? All I want to do is open Outlook. So I click OK and now I get
another message:
"The action could not be completed."
I have no idea what action it thinks I'm trying to do. So I click OK again.
Now I get this dialog box titled Microsoft Exchange Server. It has two text
boxes. The first text box is the server name and what a coincidence! It has
my first name in it. The second one is labeled 'mailbox' and it has some
embarrassingly silly name I've given myself (you know how programs want to
know organization or company name, so I've giving my 'company' a silly
name).
So anyhow, I click OK on this Microsoft Exchange Server thingy and now I get
another error message:
"Unable to open your default mail folders. The information store could not
be opened."
I'm still trying to figure out what it thinks is my information store, but I
click OK. Now I get yet another little message that says:
"Would you like to open your default File System folder instead?"
Since I'm now quite curious what the heck these things are, I decide, 'sure,
why not?' So I click Yes.
Now, I have what looks like a stripped down version of Outlook. Basically
all it is, is Windows Explorer. It has a list of all my drives and a
useless, as well as slyly smiling, little paperclip off to the right
exclaiming, "Welcome to Microsoft Outlook!"
Not! This is not Outlook. I have the same version of Outlook installed on my
other pc and it's a real version of Outlook that actually works. I installed
Outlook from the same CD too. So I know the CD isn't the problem. This
computer is also in good shape, so I don't think it's the computer.
Evidently, I have done something to a setting somewhere (since it seems to
know who I am) and I have no idea what that might be.
My other computer doesn't do this weird stuff. I double click Outlook on my
desktop and voila! It works. This is just so strange. I've tried
uninstalling and reinstalling. I've downloaded the service packs. I've done
just about all I know to do and I must say that I'm utterly baffled.
Any suggestions?
Thanks so much,
Cindy
