Microsoft evaluation software will not install on XP SP2

I have successfully downloaded, on separate occasions (more than one
month apart), both Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Beta, as well as
Microsoft Office Standard 2007 Trial.

Once downloaded, in both subsequent attempts to install either of
these, an "Installation Progress" window is displayed on my desktop
(containing a progress bar a little below the centerline of its
window).

But the progress bar never infills with progress. (During the entire
time of this absence of progress activity, my hard drive light never
blinks either.)

I can leave this "Installation Progress" window up for hours and
nothing infills into the bar.

It's happened with both of these downloads--2 of 2. To this day,
neither of these have been installed as a result.

If I get tired of seeing no installation activity after an
interminable amount of time, and then click on the [X] in the upper
right corner of the window, the "Installation Progress" window
responds with, "Are you sure you want to cancel setup?"

If I press <Yes>, the window never disappears.

What's going on here?

Thank you for any assistance.

Thanks. But when I tried it, THAT hung up interminably.

Also when I go to remove old Microsoft office versions using the Add
or Remove Programs section of Control Panel, those get halfway through
a progress feedback bar and then stop and hang interminably.

What can I try next?
Do you have other problems with your system? If you do, I would suggest
a re-install. (Apologies if this has been suggested or is not
appropriate. I've not read all the thread).

Cheers,

Cliff
