Microsoft DirectX add/remove

(1) How do I remove the older version of directx ?
(2) Is it necessary to remove it ?
(3) When I install the newer version, does it automatically removes the older version ?

I don't see any sign of directx posted on the 'Add or Remove Programs' in 'Control Panel'. I am
using the latest version of IE7 on XP Pro.

Any help or comments will be highly appreciated.

Direct X cannot be removed, if you install a newer version of direct X their
is no reason to remove the older version it is written on top of the older
one just like if you install service pack 2 their is no need to uninstall
service pack 1 first.
