Thanks. The Windows updates only showed up 10 minutes ago.
I had checked earlier and there were no updates!

Too bad Windows update no longer works on W2K Pro.

The site tells me ActiveX is required, but I'm not blocking ActiveX
in the trusted zone. I've gone as far as to disable my firewall with
no success.

It also tells me my computer is set to receive updates
automatically, but that doesn't seem to be working either.

Here's what I get:
Software Upgrade for Some Windows Components Required

To use Microsoft Update, you must first install the latest version
of some Windows components. This will allow your computer to work
with these new features on the site:

More updates: Get updates for Windows and for popular Microsoft
programs such as Microsoft Office in one place.

Faster updates: The latest Microsoft Systems Installer (MSI)
improves the way updates are installed, delivering updates in the
smallest possible packages in the shortest amount of time.

Easier navigation: Now you can find updates by priority or by
product while helpful links and important messages help ensure you
are installing all high-priority updates for your computer.

Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)
0 KB , 0 minutes (Downloaded; ready to install)
The Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool enables you to verify
that your copy of Microsoft Windows is genuine. The tool validates
your Windows installation by checking Windows Product Identification
and Product Activation status. After you install this item, you may
have to restart your computer. Once you have installed this item, it
cannot be removed.

I'm afraid Microsoft has totally disrupted the update process. This
is what happened when I tried to download 896727:

The download you requested is unavailable. If you continue to see
this message when trying to access this download, go to the "Search
for a Download" area on the Download Center home page.

Hi Bob,
There was a problem earlier with a hash file or some piece not agreeing.
They may have pulled it till they fix it up.

FWIW, WindowsUpdate and Microsoft-Update (auto-update) processes
worked flawlessly on XPP. Neither works on W2K.

That's ugly. The piece it is suppose to be putting in there is the Windows
Genuine Validation code.

Assuming (sorry--I've got to cover all the bases) that your version of
windows IS genuine--I'd call Microsoft PSS at 1-866-PCSafety if you are in
the United States or Canada. This line if for free help for issues of virus
infection or security patches. Since you seem to be unable to acquire a
pretty important set of security patches (imho)--I'd give them a call.

I'd love to hear how it goes?

I updated a W2kPro VPC earlier today--so that stuff should all be working on
that platform--also a number of W2k servers.

This isn't global--its an issue with your machine, I believe.

I agree. The problem is that Microsoft update seems to be corrupt
and there is no way to uninstall it. Can I reinstall and if so, do
you have a link?

At this point the system seems to think ActiveX is disabled. This is
only true for the update site as I haven't seen the problem with any
other site.
The next problem is that update is requiring validation for W2K. The
alternate method of validation is only valid for XP or server 2003.

Your assumption is correct, sir.<g>

I've been doing some sleuthing on my own and I've found this:

WINNT\SoftwareDistribution\Download
File name: 9160b6b3929938243b7d18417810677d9b9983b7
Description: Windows Genuine Advantage Setup
File version: 6.0.2900.2180
Product version: 1.3.0254.0
Original Filename: Setup.exe
Product Name: Microsoft® Windows Genuine Advantage Validation
Size: 453,384 bytes
Created: Tuesday, July 26, 2005, 12:26:22 PM

The details match on another W2K installation.

As I do have the icon for Automatic Updates in the control panel, I
think I can forget about the validation tool being corrupt.

So I called 1-866-PCSafety. I spent an hour to get a case number and
3 more hours destroying Windows with professional assistance.<g>

The gentleman I worked with first directed me to the rescue site and
took control of the pc. He was able to bypass the validation problem
by downloading WGA and running it. Now the problem was that every
update still had a length of 0 bytes.

He wanted to rename the CatRoot folder, so booted into safe mode.
It's been a long time since I'd seen a BSOD.<bEg>

At that point we couldn't boot into safe mode or normally without
the BSOD. He had me do a Windows repair from the cd and replaced the
system registry with the original registry. now we could boot the
system, but the drive letters have changed and it's running IE 5.0.
I have no internet access at this point as my wireless adapter had
lost it's profile would not accept the passphrase. We gave up for
the night.

Once off the phone with him, I reinstalled the driver for the
wireless adapter and could set the passphrase but still had no
internet access. Hmmmm...I can't change settings in ZAP. Reinstalled
ZAP. Still no access. Checked Internet settings and removed
Microsoft client, file and printer sharing, netbios, etc. Disabled
DHCP and set address and DNS manually. Still no access, but now I
can ping the DNS servers. Disabled DNS client service and wonder of
wonders, I have internet access!

After updating to SP4 (again) I encountered yet another problem with
Windows update requiring at least IE5.5. Updated to IE6SP1. Update
*still* doesn't work as somewhere in the registry IE5 is still
flagged even though the version number reflects IE6SP1.

Help | about shows Microsoft Internet Explorer5 and below that is:
Version: 6.0.2800.1106
Update Versions:;SP1;

To be continued.

Very respectfully,
Bob Vanderveen

Bob,
Other than that, how was your day? :)

Seriously, MS will get you back on the air. Call 'em back!

I didn't have to call back. He called me. We have a standing
appointment these days to start working on it after 7 PM my time.<g>

We just ended another session and we're getting close to the
original problem. The gentleman I've been working with is Sandeep
Hooda, and yes, he's in India. He tells me they've seen many
problems caused by Windows Validation and they have a backlog of
over 200 cases. Typically each member of the team will close about
10 of these cases a day, but my problem is the most entertaining
they've ever seen so the whole team is looking over Sandy's shoulder
and offering advice.

For anyone else waiting for their problems to be handled, my
apologies.<G>

He did get IE fixed tonight and that was interesting. He finally
used IEradicator from PCLite to remove IE and then installed IE6.
