My McAfFee virus scan ran and found no viruses. I
finished typing my sons report. Went to sign on to Aol
via DSL and as at times it wouldnt let me on so I re-
booted. When windows came up it said my Microsoft had
crashed. I have never heard of this happening. I have
no clue as to what to do about this. I have never had a
problem with this computer so I don't know how or what to
do to fix it. Please help or give advice. What would
make this happen to my computer or what did I do to make
this happen.

You have never heard of a computer crash before? Wow.
You need to post the exact error message you are
receiving.

P.S.: Let your son do his own homework.

A crash can happen when a program can't finish a task that
has been started, for instance, connecting to the DSL and
AOL.

It does not necessarily mean there is some terrible fault,
it just means that at that time there was a problem. The
problem could be in your computer or it could be with the
phone company's lines and switches or it could even be AOL
servers.

Since you posted on a Windows XP hardware newsgroup I
presume you have Windows XP, but this type of problem is not
usually a hardware problem and it isn't as common with XP as
it was/is with Windows 98 and ME.

McAfee is good software, but it needs to updated every week
(McAfee schedules updates on Wednesday afternoon and will
issue specials as needed in between) but even a fresh update
won't detect a brand new virus that was just released. So
don't rely totally on the software to detect viruses and
think you can act foolishly.

If the problem happens again (and again) it means there is a
problem, perhaps with your software, less likely with your
hardware and still possibly with the network.

Ditto with the other person who answered you, let your kids
do their own homework, with your guidance and supervision.
Get them a typing tutor program, even little kids can learn
to touch type.
