Hi.

I am using the wireless base station to connect 1 desktop
(ethernet) and 2 notebooks (wireless). The WEP is enabled,
but I'm concerned about firewall protection. It's not
clear to me if that's something built into the hardware or
whether I need to enable that on the PCs (all run XP). I
had some difficulty seeing and pinging one of the
notebooks until I realized the firewall on it was enabled.
But is my home network protected--within limits--by the
base station's firmware?

Puzzled,

There IS a stateful packet inspection firewall built into the hardware, but
you can run a software firewall on top of that.

But not XP's built-in Internet Connection Firewall which, by design,
blocks File and Printer Sharing.

I agree with *you* on this.
http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/firewall.asp has a different
opiion:

Q. Should I use ICF on a computer that is also behind a hardware
firewall?
A. Yes. You should turn on the Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall
for all computers in your home network. This helps prevent the spread of
viruses or worms across your network if a computer is infected. A computer
on the network could become infected through a separate Internet connection,
such as one on a laptop that is used on your home network and on public
networks. Or a virus could be introduced to a computer on your network by
way of e-mail or software installed from a CD or floppy disk.

Running same thimg on 3 pc and 2 laptops firewall great
in the base but have it turned n on each pc
