I have, literally, a thousand windows host files that are active and in need
of permanent deletion. I had been going along one by one for a while, but
the system has slowed to the point of needing eight to ten seconds for each
line item to be deleted. Is there a way to delete "all" or identify more
than one at a time for deletion?

Microsoft Antispyware's hosts file tools are not up to the job, frankly.

In addition, I suspect that you are completely misinterpreting the meaning
of the entries that you are finding in your hosts file. (It is, in fact, a
single text file, with many lines of entries.)

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

gives some explanation of the function of this file, including how those
entries you are seeing are probably working---usefully for you.

Near the end of this reference is an icon for "Hoster" which is a much more
effective editor for working with the hosts file--I'd recommend using that
rather than the functions within Microsoft Antispyware, which are confusing
and poorly worded.
