Windows XP microsoft anti-spyware problem

I can not acess my e-mail at all (this has been going on for 2 days now). I got rid of norton because the subscription ended and my tech guy at work told me to use AVG and microsoft anti-spyware. So i put both on my computer. After fiddling with it for about 3 hours the program finally ran and i had microsoft anti spyware on my computer. The problem is that when i go to update the program it says Warning, could not connect to the internet! I have no idea what to do about it! Like i said earlier I can not access my e-mail so i am using my friends e-mail.

PLEASE HELP!!!!

hey no i dont use outlook i can not access any of my website mail. at all it is anoying i go to myfriends dorm to use his comp. I ran about 5 anti virus scans adawareSE and spybot they both found stuff but nothing happened to my e-mail.
PLEASE HELP!!!
