Seems I read Microsoft does not send attachments and any that come are bogus
and have virus. Is this correct?

Yes.

Microsoft *NEVER* distributes software via email. The mail which you received is not from Microsoft, though the return address says so. Please visit the following links:

Hi, Loren.

As you've been told in several different newsgroups today, yes, that's
correct.

When you MUST post the same message in multiple newsgroups, please
crosspost, rather than multipost. That is, put all the newsgroup addresses
in a single message. That way, when I read it in one NG, it will be marked
"read" - for me - in all of them and I won't have to read it over and over.
The payoff for you is that all the responses will be in a single coherent
thread and will appear in all of those NGs, so you won't have to look for
replies in all of them. And, if you get wrong or incomplete advice in one
NG, a reader in a different NG can correct it or add to it.
