I use access 97 for a non-profit organization.
Keeping all there member information records on.
The problem that just started is when I go to the
program I DO NOT get the password log on box to type in
the name and passcode. It goes right to the program and
when I try to get access to any of the records it tells
me I am not a authorized user.
How do I correct this.....PLEASE HELP!
Well from what I can tell a couple things have happened. First off you never
had the application properly secured, but you were fooled into thinking it was
because as long as you used the correct Workgroup file it "looked" like security
was correct.
Now, the default workgroup has been changed to a different (non-secured) group
somehow, either because the secured one was moved or deleted and Access has
returned to using system.mdw or because someone used the workgroup admin tool to
change the default one being used. The result of this should have been that you
not be able to open the file at all. Since security was done incorrectly, you
can get in, but can't gain access to the objects within.
Do a search on the disk for all files with an mdw extension and see how many you
find. Then use the Security Admin tool to determine which mdw file is currently
set as the default. Using that same tool to join one of the other mdw files
might result in you getting a login prompt when you launch Access. If so, there
is a good chance that it is the file you should be using and it will let you use
the app as before. Otherwise, you might have to hope that the security holes
present are large enough for you to remove security entirely so it can be set up
again from scratch properly.
Another possiblity is that you *are* using the same workgroup file as before,
but someone has logged in and removed the password for the Admin user. If the
Admin user has no password then you are no longer prompted when opening Access.
If you open the file and determine that the current workgroup does have other
users defined, then you might just have to reapply a password to the Admin user
to get back to where you were.
