I just went and got an update from Windows...KB890830 which is a malicious
tool thing. When I checked my past history, that number was downloaded in
Feb. Is this the same thing, or is it an update to it? Never had the same
number download twice. Thanx in advance for any answers....:)

This file is updated once a month but keeps the same KB number.

It is updated every month. Unless you save it to disk, it does not install as
such, just scans your PC for some malware (hence the monthly updates).
It creates a log file, mrt.log, in C:\WINDOWS\Debug

Each time it is run, it appends a report, e.g. the latest omne recorded the
following on my PC:
Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool v1.14, March 2006

Thank U both for the input. I usually got to the Microsoft site and see if
there is anything new and was surprised to see it. It just said it was
downloading and then when it finished said it was installed. Oh well, now at
least I know. Thanx again..:)

Whilst it is true that there is no change in the KB reference number and that
a log is generated on running the programme; IT IS NOT TRUE that the
programme does not install on the hard disk.
On the contrary I use this programme frequently and always as a measure of
security when disconnecting from the net at the end of a session.
The programme can be found at C:\Windows\System32\MRT.exe ; MRT standing for
MicroSoft Removal Tool.
I find it easier to create a "short-cut icon" and locate the icon on my
"desktop"...... a double click and away she goes.
The icon is apt in design being the image of a Window with accompanying
sponge and soap suds.
If you don't believe me test by executing/running MRT upper or lower case
letters makes no difference,
Cheers,mike.

Hi

MRT is only a tool for heavily messed up PCs and only detects and
removes a few severe threats.

All users must use a real antivirus program and antispywareprogram.

Cannot see how this tool can "measure" anything then to save
heavily infested PCs without normal protection from established
protection Vendors. Every protection include these threats.

But it for sure saves some users from disasters......

I just thought I might add my acknowledgement to MicroSoft for the
incorporation of an additional intermediate GUI to facilitate the more
efficient use of the Microsoft Removal Tool programme. This additional
function installed with yesterday's update.
The new GUI offers a choice of 3 modes of scanning;
1) Rapid Analysis
2) Complete Analysis
3) Personalised Analysis
The third option gives the rapid analysis option together with one or more
selected folders.
Cheers again.
Question: Why can I not post a new thread using IE7 Beta 2 ?
Is it a bug?
The "New" liunk is as dead as a dormouse.
My apologies for any inexactitudes in translation from my French localised SO.

Hi again

It was just a comment ;) I`ve seen users which believes that
MRT is equal to virus protection and it´s only a few threats
that MRT can detect, less then 1 % of a total......

IE7 Beta 2:

This is probably beacuse you must permit popups from MS support page.

A new thread is a popup, to answer is a standard window.

Hope this helps

Never crossed my mind that it would replace my AVG,AntiVir,Avast, etc.
As for severe threats;
perhaps all threats are potentially severe.
BUT in the history of the 14 Versions to date ALL and I repeat ALL Viruses
received on my PC would have been identified and eliminated by the MicroSoft
tool.
The fact that I prefer for example to check all incoming mail , etc on
reception is a matter of preference and convenience.
Applying the well known Pareto Rule that 80% of the problem is caused by 20%
of the viruses; it can be quickly appreciated that the MS tool is actually
much more efficient than your subjective opinion would suggest.
I have never had a sophisticated AntiViral programme stuffed full of
"Heuristics" pick up anything more than a few false positives.
I would note that supplies a perfectly good shortcut icon available in your
Documents and Settings" folder for placing on your desktop.

I include the log from the Complete Analysis option now available with MRT;

The scan taking just over 27 minutes to complete and being called an
extended scan.

Glad to stand corrected: early versions deleted the mrt.exe after running
from Microsoft updates, never checked after that. After doing a manual scan
with it if you click view the resuls of your scan, it shows the things it was
looking for: a growing, but still relativelky small list.

I think that you may be seeing a bug relating to the IE7 beta. Not sure
whether the bug is in IE or in the forum software--but I have heard other
references to such a bug--but without the specifics.
