I have a Dell Precision 220: 512ram 16gHD:
Q- Does Win2000 Pro support the use of microphones?
I open recorder; have mic connected; try recording sound
with mic; it shows the recording being made but when I play
it makes weid sound; nothing of what I recorded.

Q- Is there any testing device for mic?
There's no info in Help of Recorder.

Thank you

Crackling static would indicate a bad electrical connection. Check,
socket, plug, wire, and mike. If any defects are apparent, replace.
Tapping and moving the parts would be a method of inspecton while the
mike is turned on.

Or put the 'o' in huh? :)

Have you got a motherboard with a VIA chipset on it, and a Sound Blaster
card of any kind? If you've not changed the slot in which the card is
located, the drivers for 2000 may have been replaced with ones that kind-of
cause the crackling to occur. Do a Google search on 'crackling via
soundblaster' and you'll see what I mean. It's been their bane of
existence. In addition the default WMA drivers for SB cards aren't too
great either. I was glad recently to have to replace my SBLive card with a
Trust 5.1 Optical, which is about the same structure as the SBLive Platinum
with a separate back plane instead of the front panel. It doesn't use the
same chipset as the SBLive does - and as a result no more problems. The
Trust card in UK money was £25 but most likely it'll be much cheaper in the
US.

If you have the VIA chipset problem you might be able to solve the crackling
by updating the BIOS and chipset drivers from their web site. Otherwise I
would suggest switching the card around between slots and see if there's a
difference.

Of course given that microphones for PC sound cards are dirt-cheap, one
could spend a few bucks and replace it to make sure there's no loose
connection. But my experience lends to the VIA-SBLive thing. Pain in the
tail.
