I just got a mic, i know it works cause i tried it on another computer. But it wont work on mine. Ive got all the volume controls set ok and if you shout you can see a small change in the voice recorder thing. Anyone think of anything? Its plugged into the standard mic jack on the motherboard.

Cheers.

Have you got the "mic boost" option enabled in the sound control panel? Can you actually hear anything if you play back a recording?

Not sure what motherboard/software you're using here, but is it possible there's an option to toggle the mic in socket between line in and Mic? It sounds as if it's plugged into line in to me.

Typical line in level is 500 - 775mv whilst a mic's is around 25mv.

Yeah i do have the mic booster on. Also, the motherboard is a jetway i think, there is a line in and a mic socket, def plugged into the mic socket. Have been looking on windows help etc. Is there maybe something which is not enabled even though the mic volume is up high etc? Cant seem to find anything and am going round in circles. VERY annoying!

Is the jack plug on the mic three pole (balanced) or two pole (unbalanced)?

Whatever it is, keep talking on the mic so that you'd hear mic signals out of your speakers, then try pulling the jack plug out the socket a little, sort of wiggle it in and out a bit. Does that bring up the audio level?

I have the same problem - Go to -

Start> Control Pannel> Sounds and audio devices

On this menu go to -

Audio> "then under sound recording click" volume.

Under where it has the volume for microphone, there is a little box saying "Select" TICK THIS BOX!

Close the audio properties down... And volla! - it works!

Hope this helps,
