I have a microphone and it is installed in the right place
on the back of the computer.

But:

It doesn't work

Can anyone help before I cut my head off.

Open the soundcard's controls, perhaps with a double-click on the
"speaker" icon at the bottom-right of the screen. Verify that the mic
slider is turned up and not muted.

Click OPTIONS (if available) |ADJUST VOLUME|FOR RECORDING. Select the box
for the mic, which will turn it on.

I have the same problem. The check mark for microphone is greyed out so I
can't re-set it.

Can someone help me before biojoe cuts his head off?

If not, can someone help me after he cuts his head of?
