Has anyone tested to see if their desktop pc microphone or line-in works?

It's detected both but it doesn't detect my voice.

I had a similar problem when attempting to use the microphone that is
combined with my webcam. However, i installed a stand alone mic, in the mic
plug at the front of my pc, clicked on Control panel>sound> then the
recording tab. In the recording tab i right clicked on the microphone i was
using and selected properties. in the microphone properties tab i clicked on
the Microphone Boost option, clicked OK. Finally i set the microphone i had
just plugged in as default and everything worked fine. I have since done the
same thing with an old microphone headset - inserting the mic jack into the
mic socket and speaker jack into the line out socket at the back of the pc.
Again, after setting the microphone up as outlined above this worked fine
too.
