Open up volume controls by right click on icon at right end of task bar. If
microphone doesn't show up, go into properties menu and select it. If you
deselect mute, you should hear sound thru' speakers. This bypasses your
application to verify hardware is working. The mute check box status
shouldn't effect your application (volume control will). Generally you mute
to prevent unwelcome feedback, but doing as I said gives a quick check on
hardware status..
