microphone stopped working

My microphone stopped working for no apparent reason and I get the message
that the audio equipment is used by another program. However, it is not used
by another programe. I have not installed any new software, other than the
windows automatic updates. The hardware appears to be OK

What can I do?

Try, unplug the mike and reboot. Then connect again and reboot to
pick it up again. If you've already tried that, then rightclick the sound
icon, bottom of screen next to clock, and click "Open Volume Control.
See if Mute is checked under Microphone, if it is, uncheck it.

Thanks for the advice but this hasn't worked. Do you have any more ideas?
