When opening the "Speech" Section of the Control Panel, I
get the error message:

::The requested task cannot be carried out because the
necessary engine could not be created. Please select a
different engine and/or a different audio device::

My options are limited at this point, especially
considering that when I close the panel, I get this error
message:

::An exception occurred while trying to
run "shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL "C:\Program Files\Common
Files\Microsoft Shared\Speech\sapi.cpl",Speech"::

The userlexicon fix (delete the lexicon file) didn't seem
to do anything, and I'm wondering if there's any sort of
workaround that I might be able to use. Much thanks for
your help.

I installed speech sdk5.1 on windows 2000 and it worked for a while,
Then I got the same message that you are getting. I finally fixed it
by uninstalling the software, deleting the registry entry for
microsoft speech and reinstalling sdk5.1.

The registry entry was under
HKEY_CURRENT_USER/software/microsoft/speech

I deleted the entire speech folder.
