Microphone Port not working

I have had my microphone plugged in the back of my pc for along time and it
works fine but when i plug it into the port in the front of the pc the
computer does not know its there and i cannot use it.

please help
 
Double-click the volume control in the system tray. In the microphone
column, click Advanced, then click Front Panel Mic.
