Mice hang after 7-8 hours use with both an XP & 2000 system

Having a problem on both my home machines; a radio/optical
mouse on a 2000 system (512Mb RAM/Pentium 3) and standard
MS wheel mouse on a Windows XP system (256Mb/Pentium 3).
Both systems up-to-date on Service Pack & critical
patches. Protected by Symantec AV 2003.

Mouse movement and button control becomes extremely
unresponsive after long period of use. Problem goes away
if either machine re-booted. Log-on/log-off on 2000
machine does not remove the problem.

Only happened in last 2 weeks, no obvious cause. Have
tried re-installing mouse driver without effect.

Grateful for any tips/solutions.

Are they USB devices?, if so there is an issue after the
machine goes into hibernate and 're-awakes'

MS definitely have a new USB driver avialable for XP ...
worth a try?

Sadly no, both mice on serial ports.

Can interrogate system using keyboard, mouse driver
reported as operating fine, no obvious error messge
sources in the management error log.

Highly irritating but not obvious how to fix.

Any suggestions on a solution most appreicated.
