mice frozen

Somehow I managed to freeze both the attached mouse and the touchpad and
can't seem to undo it. It only seems to happen when I enter under my
profile.

When I entered in under my profile, the tapping function of the touchpad
didn't work. After several reboots, I got it to work, but in subsequent
boots it would freeze. Trying options, I disabled the connected mouse and
now it doesn't work either and I can't seem to undo it. I've gone in under
safe mode but it freezes up there, too. SO I can't get to Control
Panel/Mouse to try and fix the problem.

Any suggestions?
 
click start, then click run & type:
/scannow then press enter.

this will scan & protect your files
in case they get corrupted.

Please quote at least some of the original post for clarity. The OP
asked:

The System File Checker probably won't be useful here. Since the OP says
this only happens in his profile, here are a few things to try:

1. Log into the built-in Administrator account. In XP Home, boot the
computer into Safe Mode. Do this by repeatedly tapping the F8 key as
the computer is starting up. This will get you to the right menu.
Navigate using your Up arrow key; the mouse will not work here. Once in
Safe Mode, you will see the normally hidden Administrator account. The
default password is a blank.

In XP Pro, you do not need to go into Safe Mode. At the Welcome Screen,
do Ctrl-Alt-Del twice to get the classic Windows logon box. Type in
"Administrator" and whatever password you assigned when you set up
Windows.

2. Once logged into the Administrator account, first try a System
Restore to when things worked.

If the System Restore doesn't work, then try:

3. Update the touchpad drivers from the laptop mftr.'s website for your
specific model laptop.

If that doesn't work, create a new user account for yourself and copy
your data to it. After your data is copied over and you are sure the
touchpad is working correctly in the new account, delete the old
account.
