Well, check realtek website for drivers updates; updated or not, uninsall
then reinstall the card from device manager then install the drivers.

I had Windows 98 SE and had no trouble with my mic but now that I have this
new PC with XP Home my mic is giving me nothing but grief! I first tried
with the mic I had on my old PC and I could hardly hear myself with it and
there was alot of static. Then I bought a new mic. just incase, same thing.
I even bought a headset with a mic, same troubles. All the mic. config.
things are unmuted and the sliders are all the way up (Realtek AC'97)
Apparently the man who installed XP Home as well as all the drivers when I
bought it did
