mfc and dotnet version

I never had thought about it, but I suspect it would be the version that
housed the regasm.exe used to register the dll for COM.
 
This [1] article describes how a .NET application selects which .NET
framework version to use.

How does an non .NET application (mfc) select which .NET framework to
use when using an .NET assembly?
