MFC-9700 copy problem

My Brother MRC-9700 just started leaving a white vertical area on
copies whether the original was fed through the ADF or just placed on
the glass. Prints are fine. So are faxes. I am trying to figure out
what could cause just copies to come out bad. Any ideas? TIA.
 
It sounds like a problem in the scanner section. It may be a problem
with the calibration area. Is the area completely missing the image, or
is it just lighter? How wide an area are we speaking of, and is it
always in the same place?

Hmmm a very confusing problem.
Because the problem happens with the ADF and the Flatbed it seems unlikely that
there is any contaminant on the scanner optics which in any case would cause
vertical black lines rather than white.
White vertical lines are normally caused by problems in the laser scanner in
the printer itself, usually contamination on the laser optics but that would
result in poor print and FAX's.
For this reason are you absolutely sure that prints from the computer are not
affected? Some prints and FAX's may not always show the problem.

OK in that case it is probably in the CCD unit. This is the unit that travels
left to right in the document scanner and contains the flourescent tube. The
tube itself may be faulty having a dark portion or there may be some
contamination on the lens at the top of the unit (assuming this model has a
lens). You would have to dismantle the scanner and the CCD unit to check this.
My first guess is that the tube is dying, fluorescent tubes can develop dark
areas when they become old. I have rarely seen tubes fail but they do have a
limited life. The tubes are difficult to replace and indeed are not recommended
for replacement so I would be inclined to get the CCD out and see if there is
anywhere that needs cleaning. Brother parts are difficult to get sometimes
unfortunately.
I have the service manual for this model but it is over 13 Megabytes, happy to
send it to you if your posted e-mail address is a valid one and you can receive
a file of this size.

it off the server so I can continue to get email.

Is this something that someone with some modest skill can do? I have
built my own computers, but I have never torn apart a printer.

Ok I will do that....I have never dismantled a CCD but I have removed one, not
too hard, my concern is that there may be some adjustments needed if you
replace the tube but I'm not sure.

The manual got bounced, I will split the file into smaller parts and send them
one by one later, sorry it will be a few hours before I can get that done but I
will try.
