My computer was infected with Metamail malware (mass mailer program). When
I tried to uninstall it, it simply did not respond, and remained in the
program list in the 'add/remove programs' control panel applet. I have
since deleted the program directory to stop the program from running. Any
ideas how I can wipe it for good ?

Cheers

Blewyn,

Step 1
* click Start > Run > type msconfig , click OK
* click into the 'Startup' tab
* uncheck any unwanted startups, click OK
* select 'Exit without restart'
Step 2
* Take a look in your 'Start > Programs > Startup' folder,
right-click & Delete any icons in that folder, no exceptions
Step 3
* click Start > Run > type regedit , click OK
* click to highlight 'My Computer'
* select 'File' > 'Export' > name your Registry Backup,
click 'Save'
* click to highlight 'My Computer'
* select 'Edit' > 'Find' > type the company name, the product name
& various other combinations after each search completes
* when it finds a reference to the Malware, right-click & Delete
Note: any problems
* reopen Regedit > click 'File' > 'Import' >
locate your saved Registry Backup, click 'Open'
* reboot after completion
