The original purpose of the 'Messenger Service' is to send quick "memo" type messages to one
or more users on a local network. For example, an administrator could quickly inform an
entire workgroup that a particular printer or server will be down for the day. Disabling it
just turns off this functionality -- the 'Messenger Service' is not connected to any other
component in Windows XP.

I'm not referring to msn messenger or windows messenger -
but 'messenger service' - which is apparently
responsible for very annoying messages from sites like
endads.com - I have been advised I can disable it in
admin tools without any repercussions?
