I would prefer not to have messenger . I don't use on line
messaging and I have clicked the appropriate box in Outlook Express to not
start up messenger. Still
my firewall keeps asking if I want messenger to access the internet or act
as a server. Does OE use messenger? Does it need to? Do other
applications need it? Should I let messenger access the
internet or act as a server?

Thanks, Mike Fanning

There are two Windows messenger/MSN Messenger related newsgroups. One
has XP in the title and the other I am not sure, search the newsgroups
using a related string of letters, like "mess". There are many people
who don't want Windows Messenger to load when they start their
computer or when they are on the Internet.

Try this - not sure if this is the right solution, but it seems the
right one: go into your "control panel" and click "Add or Remove
Programs". Then to left of the programs listed in the window border
is an Icon that says 'Add/Remove Windows Components". The last choice
listed I think is "Windows Messenger". Uncheck the box in front of
it, then proceed on with "next" or whatever the button is to proceed
with.. It will then reconfigure your system.

If you want to remove Windows Messenger permanently just paste the next
line into Start --> Run:

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

After a reboot a window will pop up to remove leftovers.
If you ever want Windows Messenger back, just visit the Windows XP
Update site. You'll find the program there.
