Messenger

I have recently downloaded Messenger 6.1 and thought it
would overwrite automatically the previous 4.7 version.
It didn't and now the laptop tries to boot up both
versions... hmmmmm ... I have tried to delete the old
4.7 folder but the system won't let me. I deleted 6.1
abd then tried to delete 4.7 ... no joy. I re-downloaded
and re-installed 6.1 in the hope that I could force an
overwrite of 4.7... no joy. If anyone there can make
sense of what I hava said above and he problem, I would
be very grateful for an answer.

Best regards

There are two different programs (from different groups in Microsoft) ,
that get confused. Windows Messenger is the one that comes with XP and
is integrated, so it is used (for example) in OE Contacts. It comes as
version 4.7 - there is an upgrade at
www.microsoft.com/windows/messenger
to its version 5.0 - I would get that unless you *want* to run the MSN
one instead

MSN Messenger is similar but different and has MSN extras, which you may
or may not like. It has gone from *its* version 5 to version 6, but
numbering of the two programs is unrelated. Unfortunately when you get
a message from Windows Messenger that there is an update available the
page it takes you to is the one for MSN with a large Download button to
download that - not the Windows one

Go into 4.7 and disable it so it wont run on bootup
and wont run in the background Peter. That
may fix it. Or goto Kelly's site. Cant remember
the URL and get the VBS file I think it is to remove
4.7.

If you're using Win XP, you might like to try:

Start>Settings>Control Panel>Add or Remove Progams

Click on the button for Add/Remove Windows Components, uncheck Windows
Messenger, etc.

As far as I know Windows Messenger is a separate program from MSN Messenger
which may be why you're having problems.

Cheers
