Hi there
I have upgraded my Windows Messenger to the new MSN
Messenger (now at version 6) and the old Windows one is
still hanging around! I can't get rid of it, and it's
really annoying, as it automatically signs me in, even if
I don't want it to. I have changed the settings to NOT
do this, and have even gone so far as to remove it from
the Windows Components section under Add/Remove Programs
(cause it's not listed anywhere as a program!), but
nothing works. I don't need this little program anymore,
not now I have the latest version - which I had presumed
would simply overwrite it.

Can anyone offer me some advice here?

Thanks
Tehkella

Greetings Tehkella,

MSN Messenger 6 does not upgrade Windows Messenger -- they're separate Messenger products.
If you fully removed Windows Messenger, you would be be preventing Remote Assistance,
Whiteboard, Application Sharing and any other applications that utilize Messenger from
working (or loading without problems).

Instead, since it sounds like you've already performed the necessarily "disabling", do you
have Norton Antivirus 2003 installed? Norton added a new "instant messaging scanning
feature to Norton Antivirus 2003, which can conflict with Messenger and cause this behavior.
To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus icon in the System
Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'), click Options, then
Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK

IF you can't get rid of MSN Messenger 4.7 after upgrading
to 6.0 etc, "run" the following entire line - and it's
gone after
you reboot and after you confirm that you want it and its
info
deleted. It does NOT destroy anything inside 6.0

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%
\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
