Messenger v 8 problem

Hi,
Until today messenger 7.5 worked like a charm, then this morning I
couldn't log in. So, I downloaded messenger 8. Now when I double click on the
icon nothing happens. But, if I go into task manager I see it there as a
process, but never as an application.
Now to make matters even more complicated, I had an older version of
messenger (version 4), and to my astonishment, it works just fine.
I have tried running the two .reg files (enablemessenger +
enablewindowsmessenger) mentioned previously in this forum but seemingly to
no avail.
I'm running XP professional with all the latest updates/patches etc.
Could someone please help me, it's driving me bonkers.
Thank you.

Greetings,

Those reg files are for Windows Messenger 4.x or 5.x, which as you already mentioned, is
working fine.

Instead of randomly grabbing at straws, deleting Messenger files and so on, try might try
using System Restore to restore to a few days ago before the problem occurred. To do so,
click Start, then Help & Support, then "Undo changes to my computer using System Restore" and
then restore back to before it was a problem.

Hi Jonathan,
Thanks for the info, did as you instructed, and now it is running
messenger v7.5. But.... now it freezes (Application not responding) shortly
after I enter my password. And not only that, but when I go to Task manager
in Appilications it shows 2 MSN Messengers running (and there are 2 icons
showing in the bottom right windows toolbar) . I checked previously in
Processes and it was not running there. So somehow it seems to be starting it
up twice??? I have double checked to make sure I wasn't clicking more than I
should have.
I know I have had this problem before but I'm damned if I can remember
what I did to fix it. Sorry.

Jonathan,
Just an update to let you know what's happened since my last post today.
Well, I tried to uninstall messenger v7.5 via the uninstal procedure. Even
tried to repair it etc but to no avail. It kept coming back with an error
message that said the something about the patch being incompatable etc. So
basicslly I just had to delete the MSN messenger folder. I then downloaded
messenger V8 (Live) and it's now partially working. Well at least I get to
sign on and it displays the pop up with my list of contacts etc, but then if
I try to click anywhere on the messenger pop-up it freezes (not responding).
But at least now it's just running one version and displaying the pop-up.
I ran "remove_msgrsettings.reg" and "remove_wlmpolicies.reg", but can't
remember if there are any others I should run? (I think I'm getting to old
for all this).
At least I'm getting a bit closer to seeing light at the end of the tunnel
..
William.....
