Messenger signs in using wrong passport, why?

I have two .NET passports, one was created for MSDN usage and is
connected to my work and the other was created recently for myself as
a private person. I want to use the second one for Messenger, since
the email is the correct home address etc.

But whenever my computer starts up Messenger always connects using the
MSDN passport and I have a hard time first signing out and then trying
to get it online with the private passport.

Can anyone tell me how to set the "default" passport if there is such
a thing?
Messenger tells me its version in the help/about box as:
Version 4.7(4.7.2009)
I use Windows XP-Pro and I have the most recent fixes installed.
I have never used Messenger before so there is no real sense in it
logging in with my MSDN passport...

Any clues?

Actually, Passport is integrated into Windows XP (and your profile). As such, if you save
your Passport on the MSDN site, anything that uses Passport in Windows XP will try to sign
into that account (like Messenger is). As such, to remove the saved Passport, click the
Start Button, then click the Control Panel. Then, click User Accounts in the Control Panel.
Select your account name, and then on the left side of the screen, under Related Tasks, click
'Manage my Network Passwords'. In the window that opens, click the Passport.Net\* (Passport)
entry and click 'Remove'.

This will remove the saved Passport, and now Messenger will not sign in automatically (of
course you will have to sign in manually to MSDN).

But when I installed and started to use Messenger (because my
daughters are Messenger users) I was prompted to create a new .NET
passport and I assume this is used by Messenger whenever I:
- Sign out from the automatically signed on MSDN connection
- Sign on using the other account (have to enter password)

Maybe I don't really understand the passport stuff here, I thought it
was like a certificate which contains my credentials for use on
selected websites?

In any case, if I do the above and sign on with the new account then
if there are network problems to stop the connection Messenger again
tries to connect using the MSDN account. It is really pissing me off.
Why should it do this? I should be given a possibility to tell it to
use this or that account for automatic logon (or better yet, don't do
any automatic logon, just log on if I tell it to).

Hi Bo,

When you first started Messenger for the first time, the wizard would've asked you if you
have an existing Passport, and to use that, or create a new one.

Unfortunately because Passport is centralized in Windows XP, you cannot have the automatic
login at MSDN using one account, and Messenger using another (with the exception of putting
Messenger into compatibility mode, but this isn't recommended and will disable some Messenger
functionality). If you're going to have two Passport accounts, you will need to remove the
saved one (as shown below) and simply log into both Messenger and MSDN manually (ie, type in
your login/password each time).
