A firewall will stop those. If you are using WinXP SP1 it's firewall is
adequate. Activate it for your connection.

If you don't want to install a firewall, you can follow these steps to stop
the "Messenger" popups:

1) Control panel
2) Admin tools
3) Services
4) Double-click Messenger on the list
5) Properties
6) Startup type: Manual
7) Service Status: Stop
8) Click OK
=====================
I've been told that you can also turn off MSN messenger using MSCONFIG in
the run window, turning it off from the STARTUP tab. However, I've never
done this step as I'm shy of changing my registry without clear guidance.
Just doing steps 1-8 worked for me. However, I don't USE Messenger. I
don't chat. So if you like to chat, then the firewall may be what you need.

Messenger Service is NOT Window or MSN Messenger. They are three different
things.

I'm sure you're right. I'll readily admit that I may have a
misunderstanding of the three 'messengers'. I'll make no pretence about
that. However, the steps below did end my "messenger" pop ups --
completely.
