I keep getting these pop-ups when i am on the internet.
They claim to be a messenger serviceand thatif i pay
somuch money they will stop. I know it is posible to stop
this from happening but i cant remember how. Can anyone
help me please?

Greetings Daz,

What you're seeing is the Messenger service built-in to Windows, *not* Windows Messenger
(which are two different things) which spammers are exploiting -- this is not Microsoft, nor
can Microsoft control them anymore then they can control spam to your e-mail inbox.

To get rid of these pop ups, you'll need to disable the "Messenger Service", click Start,
then Run, enter "services.msc"and click OK. Scroll down to "Messenger", select it,
right-click and then choose Properties. Under startup type, choose 'Disabled' and then
choose the 'Stop' button. After the service is stopped, click OK. Nothing in Windows or any
real third-party applications should be effected by this.

Hi,

You can debate this till everyone's hands are long taken over by carpal tunnel but the fact
is, it's disabled in Service Pack 2.

I don't see how you can debate this for as long as you implied (although an
exaggeration), we're dealing with facts.

-We should be using a firewall for security
-With a properly configured firewall, Messenger Service spam can't get
through
-Seeing Messenger Service spam is a sign that the user isn't using firewall
(or hasn't configured it properly)
-If they aren't using a firewall, they are at risk.

Is there anything above you don't agree with?

If not, then how can you argue that ignoring these warnings isn't just like
covering an infection with makeup?

BTW, in SP2, the firewall is on by default, and Messenger Service isn't the
only thing disabled.
