messenger service

I downloaded critical updates for my W2K OS and ever since, I have been
getting this annoying box that says "Messenger Services" and has annoying
messages that I simply "x" out of.

Can someone tell me what that is and how I can disable or uninstall it so
those boxes don't pop up anymore?

Get a firewall! You NEED one. There are several free ones, including
