how to i disable the messenger service within windows 2000
advance server.
i am getting a lot of unwanted popups and the message is
my messenger service is enable and i want to disable it.

1. Right Click "My Computer" and select "Manage"

2. In the Computer Management MMC, Select "Services and Applications"

3. Go to Services, and double-click on "Messenger"

4. Set the "Startup Type" to disabled. (you can also stop the service from
here as well)

5. Click ok and reboot the machine.

Disabling the Messenger Service is like covering a 5 foot in diameter hole
on your porch with two twigs. It just covers the problem, doesn't solve it.
You need a firewall. The fact that you get public Messenger pop-ups means
your system is open, and therefore more insecure than many other computers.
There are several free firewalls, including Sygate (www.sygate.com) and
ZoneAlarm (www.zonealarm.com)
