Messenger service not working

I use the "net send" command utility quite a bit (I was
very disappointed to hear that MS plans to discontinue it -
why not just make the default disabled to prevent all the
messages people on unsecured networks get?).

Anyway, it just stopped working this week. When I try to
start the messenger service, it refuses. The system log
shows messenger terminating with error 2270 which means
that it couldn't add my machine's alias name to it's list
because another machine with that name already exists.

No other machine on our network has the same name, and I
haven't changed my machine name in a long time.

Anyone know how I can make this work again?

There is substantial justification for moving away from Messenger and better
alternatives to send messages on a network which are more reliable and
secure on IP networks, but thats another discussion.

In your case you can remove the service and leverage the recover features of
booting from the CDROM. This should allow the messenger defaults to be
recreated.

- use SC.EXE to remove the service
