Messenger restart problem

My Messenger program has a habit of constantly changing
me to 'online' status from 'away' status or even 'appear
offline'.
Anyone know how to fix this?
 
This problem is very frequent. If you have 2 versions of
windows messenger or one windows messenger and one msn
messenger they can cause serious conflicts. Try
uninstalling one of them.
If you're using MSN Explorer 6 [or older] and just
installed MSN Messenger 6.1, or you have a patch for
messenger [like Plus] , reinstall the application.
 
I do indeed have 2 versions of windows on the computer.
v6.1 and an older version. I've tried to uninstall the
older one, but I can't seem to do it. Any advice?

I just chekced I have both
1. Windows Messenger 5.0 and
2. MSN Messenger 6.1
running. I enjoy 6.2 and would like to unisntall 5.0 any
advice?
