every I loaded Windows 2000 I keep getting these
irratating pop-ups from something called messenger. i have
messages from all different things just like regular pop-
ups including ones telling me how i can buy something to
keep the pop-ups from popping up. I know there has to be
a way to keep this from happening without purchasing
anything. is this something from the windows program I can
just turn off or what?
HELP?

Yes... see my previous post "The Basics" then look for the setup templates.

Hi,
just go in control panel, administrative tools, services
and stop the messenger service, if you like you can set
the startup mode in manual instead of automatic

Bye bye

Based on her query there is a very good possibility that she is running with
either no service configuration or a default configuration which could leave
her system vulnerable.
While doing it your way will solve her immediate trouble it wont help her
secure her pc. The templates will and give her a better understanding of her
system in the process.

You need a firewall because you have vulnerable ports exposed to the internet as
demonstrated by those pop ups. You can go to a site such as
http://scan.sygatetech.com/ to do a self scan to see what it reports, but I bet you
get warnings about netbios ports, etc. If your computer does not share files with
other computers, I would also disable file and print sharing in control panel/network
connection/properties. There are may free personal firewalls available. Zone Alarm is
adequate and fairly easy for novice users to configure. See the links below on
protecting your computer and where to get Zone Alarm. --- Steve
