For more information about the Messenger Service Spam and how to stop them
from your computer visit this link:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/using/howto/communicate/stopspam.asp

These windows are sent to your system using the Messenger service. You
should either use a firewall to block your file/printer sharing ports
(TCP/UDP ports 135, 137, 138, 139, and 445) from the Internet.

First thing you'll want to do is to install or enable a firewall:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q330904

Disabling Messenger Service can be a good idea, but it does not solve the
real problem.

The ads are not the real problem, the ads are only a symptom of a larger
issue. The real problem is open ports that allow unwanted traffic into the
computer.

Disabling Messenger does nothing for the open ports. You would need a
firewall that controls the traffic.

The above solution will not work if you have AOL as is not compatible with
Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall (ICF). If you have AOL, you should
contact AOL and/or get a 3rd party firewall.

Disable Messenger Service:
Start/Control Panel, click Administrative Tools, click Services.
Go down to "Messenger".
Right click "Messenger" and select Properties.
Hit the Stop Button under Service Status section
Then under Start-up select DISABLE
Click OK and follow prompts

Run Ad-Aware (free version) or Spybot to check for spyware:

Control panel, admin tools, services, messenger service,
properties, stop, disable. But more important is for you
to get a third party firewall I cannot stress that
enough!!!!

...But more important is for you

I had a problem using Sygate and Norton, so in frustration, I removed
my third-party firewall and activated the built-in XP firewall. I then
went to GRC's "Shields-Up" site <https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2> to
test the integrity of my system. It passed their tests with flying
colors.

Why is a third-party firewall so important?

Greetings --

WinXP's built-in firewall is fine at stopping incoming attacks, and
hiding your ports from probes. It doesn't give you any alarms to tell
you that it is working, though. What WinXP also does not do, is
protect you from any Trojans or spyware that you might download and
install inadvertently. It doesn't monitor out-going traffic at all,
much less block (or at least ask you about) the bad or the
questionable out-going packets.

ZoneAlarm, Kerio, or Sygate are much better, and there are a free
versions of each readily available.

FYI, the GRC Shields Up Port Probe doesn't even scan/test one of
the ports (137) used by the messenger service.

Microsoft recommend that a third party firewall is only necessary if
you don't have XP. http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/

It is my experience that protection is not guaranteed with a third
party firewall anyway because it is often not clear whether a program
requesting access is legit or not. You may, accidently or in
ignorance, give incoming access to something that the XP inbuilt
firewall would not allow, or give outgoing access to a trojan.

I have tried 1 x free and 2 x bought firewalls and found that while I
might have had control, in many cases I had no idea of why certain
programs were wanting to access the Internet.

I also know that 3rd party firewalls have caused system problems on my
computer.

A few weeks ago I had to reformat and reinstall XP. I decided to keep
it simple and take the advice of the people who produced XP and just
use the XP in-built firewall, make sure my XP is always up to date
with latest security patches, and be careful what I download.

Just my two bob's worth!
